Smyth Barkham was founded in 1997 by Joyce Smyth and Caroline Barkham who were the two partners of the Private Client department of the city firm Theodore Goddard. Together with Hugh Bradshaw and Paul Edwards they felt the needs of their clients would be better served outside the confines of a large city law firm by establishing a niche practice. The firm has gone from strength to strength since its inception. Many clients have instructed us since 1997 (and indeed earlier) and the practice has grown considerably both in terms of volume and variety of work. Driven by the evolving needs of clients who increasingly seek advice on matters originally beyond the remit of a traditional private client firm Smyth Barkham has developed to be able to deal with a multitude of legal issues.
Many of the matters advised upon are in the public eye but the firm chooses to trade on its reputation for discretion and not publicize itself in the legal press. Clients respect this confidentiality and consequently a large proportion of new instructions are based upon client recommendations.
